After climbing Mount Eolus and North Eolus the day before, we had a nice long rest at the campsite, then did another 4 AM start to climb Sunlight Peak and Windom Peak. Again, the trail was steep from the campsite up to Twin Lakes. Instead of going left at the lakes, this time, we turned right, to climb Sunlight Peak first. There is nice trail built into the talus slope, which had the ascent up that section easier than expected. The class 3 scrambling sections were straightforward. In order to climb to the true summit, it required careful class 4 scrambling to the top. Ricardo did this multiple times, using different variations, then helped me to the very top, as I was a bit too short and inflexible to reach!
After Sunlight, it was onwards to Windom Peak. Because we had brought ice axes, we were able to shorten this route and climb the snow to where we could connect with the main trail on Windom. From the summit of Sunlight to the summit of Windom took us about 1 hour, 42 minutes. We didn't spend long at the summit, as the clouds were looking dark and it started to hail. Once we had descended for about a half hour, the weather cleared and we had a beautiful descent back to the Twin Lakes and our campsite. The next morning, we hiked the 6 miles to the train stop and then caught a train back to Durango. |
