Mount Eolus 14,089' - Colorado's 33rd highest peak
July 25, 2023
Ricardo first climbed Mount Eolus on July 9, 2007 with the Colorado Mountain Club and Eduardo Strauch's son, Pedro. Ulyana and Ricardo climbed together on July 25, 2023, starting with a long drive from home to Durango (7 hours). After spending the night in the hotel, the next means of transportation was the Durango/Silverton train, a 2.5 hour ride to the Needleton wilderness "whistle stop." From there, it was 6 miles on foot into the gorgeous Chicago Basin, where we camped for the night.
The next morning, it was a 4 AM start to climb both Mount Eolus, a class 3 peak, and the nearby 14er, North Eolus (part of the 58 14ers list, but not the original 53 14ers list). The trail was steep from the campsite up to Twin Lakes. Once on Eolus, this required navigating the "catwalk", a narrow ridge, up to the class 3 ledges that lead to the summit. |
