Fletcher Mountain, 13,951' - Colorado's 60th highest peak
September 12, 2023
In order for Ulyana to reach her 100th highpoint of the Summits, Songs and Science Project, we opted to climb Fletcher Mountain, a Centennial 13er nearby to Quandary Peak, a 14er. After getting up early in the morning, but not too early, as there wasn't any predicted storm activity in the afternoon, we drove 2 hours to the trailhead. We passed the parking lot for Quandary Peak, which had about a dozen cars, and parked at the gate of Blue Lakes Trailhead, which only had two other cars in the lot. Climbing the Centennial 13ers always seem to be less crowded - in general, and especially on weekdays.
We made our way on trail for the first mile or so. After that, the trail faded out and we walked along talus until reaching the summit ridge of Fletcher. Along the ridge, we spotted an opening to an old mine shaft. It's impressive that it was at 13,650 feet! There was even an old rusted out axe. The geology of the area is stunning, with lots of metamorphic schist and gneiss. This was Ricardo's second time to the summit of this peak. He climbed it for the first time on September 7, 2008. |
